srinagar: In a daring attack, militants opened fire on a police party outside a premier hospital in Srinagar killing one policeman and injuring other.
A Pakistani terrorist, identified as Naveed Jat alias Abu Hanzullah, who was brought to the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) hospital for treatment, managed to escape with the assailants, deputy inspector general (DIG) police Ghulam Hassan Bhat said.
He said militants opened fire on a police party accompanying a group of prisoners, including Naveed, brought for a medical check-up at the hospital. “Two policemen were injured in the attack out of which one succumbed later while the other one is being treated at the hospital,” Bhat said.
Sources told DH it was a pre-planned attack to help Naveed flee from the police custody when he was brought to the hospital for a check-up. Naveed was arrested in 2014 for killing a policeman near a court in southern Pulwama district. He is believed to be an accomplice of top Lashkar-e-Toiba commander Abu Dujjana who was killed in Pulwama last year in an encounter with security forces.
“Naveed snatched weapon from a policeman as he was helped by accomplices, who were already positioned inside the hospital. Naveed was brought there by a police party from the Rainawari central jail along with five other prisoners this morning,” they said.
A senior police official said they were investigating how the militants got the information that Naveed was being taken to the hospital. “We are also investigating insider’s role in the attack. At this moment it is difficult to say anything, but the way the attack was planned indicates that militants had the full information about the strength of the police party who brought Naveed to the court,” he added.
Immediately after the incident, a red alert was sounded in Srinagar and the area was cordoned off to nab him Naveed and the other assailants, police said.
The latest attack comes two days after an Army Captain and three soldiers were killed in a ceasefire violation by Pakistani troops along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district on Sunday.
