Jammu, January 29
Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today took a swipe at Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti over the Shopian civilian killings, saying that “she (Chief Minister) only knows to play politics over dead bodies”.Countering the Chief Minister after she targeted him during her speech in the Legislative Assembly here, Omar said he had made all efforts to keep the situation away from politics. “I don’t know the art of playing politics over dead bodies. Unfortunately, our Chief Minister only knows to play politics over dead bodies. I would not have raised it if you (CM) had not made a direct reference about me,” Omar said in his inimitable manner. Earlier in his speech, Omar said his party would support whatever measures the Chief Minister would take “to end the cycle of bloodshed and violence” in Kashmir.Stressing that unabated killings in Kashmir should stop, the National Conference leader said: “I want to assure that our party will support the government in all its endeavours that would help put an end to the bloodshed and help restore calm and peace in the Valley”.Omar asked the House to rise above party politics, speak in one voice and introspect why such tragic incidents were taking place frequently. He also took a dig at the government for “sending confusing signals”, saying that “on one side, a magisterial inquiry has been ordered in the Shopian killings and on the other, an FIR stands registered. As per news reports, soldiers, including a Major, have been named in the FIR. There are charges of murder and attempt to murder, then why this magisterial inquiry? The FIR is a primary document,” Omar said. Omar said there was politics within the coalition as the BJP had been demanding withdrawal of the FIR against Army personnel. He alleged that there was “sense of impunity” among Army men which was the only reason that they targeted the youth at their chest and head.
